Ascent 2006 steel

Winner: Sculpture Award 2006 Victoria & Albert Museum
In the Cast Rooms at the V&A is a pulpit with a wonderful spiral staircase made by Giovanni Pisano. The craftsmanship of the construction and the decoration attracted me and I spent quite a while studying it. The hours – months – spent creating it amazed me.

Staircases always have a very clear sense of purpose and, as I thought about Pisano's piece, the idea occurred for Ascent. So much effort to reach a destination but how – and when – do you know that it's been worth making and that it's what you wanted?
